flower planters on mason street

The short block of Mason Street between Columbus and Lombard was closed a few weeks ago.  At first, I thought this was part of the city’s plan to make urban parks (like the one in the Castro at 17th Street).  I realized that it is part of the renovation of the North Beach branch library.

Public libraries throughout the city (16 in total) are being renovated or replaced to meet seismic safety requirements, modernize them for current technology standards, make them accessible to all users, and make them as cost effective and sustainable as possible.  The city is also moving four libraries from leased spaces to permanent (city owned) properties and has also built the first new public library in 40 years (the Mission Bay branch that opened a few years ago).

Plans for the North Beach Branch look nice, with good light, room for expanded collections, new technology (lots of computers) and room for newer media (CDs, DVDs, etc).  It will also include space for special programs including book and poetry readings, community meetings, etc.  Plus space to showcase public art.  The plan looks terrific.  It will mean disruption for the neighborhood during construction.  The library is supposed to remain open during construction.  Not sure how they will accomplish that.  For more information about the project, public review meetings, how to help raise money to pay for this project, etc., visit  the SF Public Library’s website.
