San Francisco voters will likely vote on yet another ballot initiative next year to vote on an initiative that passed the Board of Supervisors that would allow the city to develop $2.7 billion of housing over the next 15 years.  I think it is important for the city to maintain balance and diversity among our residents, and making sure there is affordable housing is one key to making sure that San Francisco remains great.

According to the article in today’s Chronicle, it is likely that the Mayor might oppose this plan (to reach a balanced budget, it is difficult for the Mayor’s Office to balance the budget if too many items are earmarked for specific projects which are mandated by voters by ballot initiative).  Which brings me to my final point–why do we elect officials, only to have them bring key legislative items to voters by ballot?  Why don’t they just vote on good ideas and make them law?
