In the last few years, there have been several proposals to use lots throughout the city of San Francisco that are slated for development as interim green spaces.  The idea behind this is that using land for temporary parks or public spaces while development is stalled (happening frequently in this economy) is better for the community than having a chain link fence marking off the boundaries of a lot.

I was very excited to see that the former freeway entrance bordered by Laguna, Fell and Octavia Streets is starting to develop as the Hayes Valley Farm.  Over the last few weeks, I have seen quick progress as the soil has been worked and plants have started to arrive. I notice when I am nearby, I steer my car in its direction so I can peek at the progress.  Last week, big piles of soil.  This week, plants in pots (for borders?).

It’s exciting to see food grown locally in San Francisco–farms in backyards and on patios, vegetables foraged in the Mission. And now, Hayes Valley Farm.
